The Male Gaze - Jack Holliday

The Male Gaze - Jack Holliday

Analysis of the video Side to Side By Ariana Grande Ft. Nicki Minaj

The audience is greeted by Ariana Grande in the first 5 seconds with little to no clothes on (swimsuit) ridding a bike surrounded by other women in swimsuits. The relationship between the singer and the audience is sexual. In the song Nicki Minaj in her lyrics says "D*ck Bike". The correlation between that and the meaning of the song is that the song is referencing that the work out is actually sexual activities. Ariana Grande constantly looks at the audience (breaking the fourth wall) but gives an animalistic look throughout the song. depending on the audience weather it was a male/female or younger/older the audience would respond to this look in different ways. If it was a male i think they would be surprised but they might have some enjoyment from this look from Ariana. However women might take this the wrong way and be mortified with the look she is presenting herself with and click of the video. the video is a sexual video based on sex popular in this generation of singers.

Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj present themselves in minimal clothing showing off curves to the audience. This would increase the male viewing and maybe a small part of the female viewing depending on the sexuality of the viewers. The singer with her group of cyclists are in tight bikinis/swimsuits, riding an exercise bike in a sort of formation while being in sync. The bikes are representing male figures by the females riding them "all night" as Ariana says in the song. For doing 'exercise' they are wearing a lots of make-up, obviously to present themselves sexy to the audience. The presentation of the singers are provocative to the audience that is the point of them as the song is strongly sexual. The clothing is not necessary but she wears the clothing to appear sexy to the audience and also to gain more of an audience while doing it.
