Research Task - Dance

1.            What makes all of these music videos from the dance music genre?
2.            Explore how the artists are using representation to appeal to their target audience in these                     three videos by picking out key frames from the video to analyse.
3.            What other music videos could you find from the same genre? Outline two and explain why                 you think they are termed dance.

1. The music in the videos is electronic dance. The videos themselves show most of the cast dancing around different settings, for example in the Sigala video it showed multiple people dancing in the street, and a woman appeared in all of these locations, dancing on roller blades. The beat of the music assists this as it fits in time with the dancing. In the MK 17 video it showed a lot of people dancing which encourages the viewers to move along with the music. In the Cola video it shows 5 women dancing around it different locations of one house, maybe representing family and friends with in dance.

2. Sigala in the video, sweet lovin uses the representation of women as they present a woman giving happiness into peoples lives through the movement of dance. In the video 17 by MK it uses a wide range of men and women around the age of 17 so in the video the director must be using the representation of youth to get the message of the song through to the audience. The video Cola by CamelPhat and Elderbrook, gives a slower version of dance, but still enough to give the viewer time to dance with the music. They use the representation women to appeal whether that be the male gaze or women's pride in general.

3. Two other Dance songs:

  • The Middle - Zedd, Maren Morris, Grey
  • Give it to me twice - Party Favor
The Middle by the main dance artist Zedd is famous for fast paced dance music to get the crowd involved. The music is very bouncy and makes the audience want to move along with it. The same with the second song by Party Favor.
