American Beauty Notes
Lester:
Lester is a middle aged man who has hit a bump in his life. The highlight of Lester's day is him "Jerking off" in the shower, this shows that he has a very sad life if that is the highlight of his day. His clothing is very bland and blends in with his surroundings. In the start of the film he is represented as the child of the family and is treated that way by his family. In the common stereotypes of the world he should be the alpha male of the house but his life is completely ruled by his wife and is looked down upon by his whole family. As seen in the picture above him and his wife are in the dark, this could be reflecting there marriage and there life and his daughter is in the light which could be showing the only light that came out of the marriage.
Carolyn:
Carolyn is Lester's wife but she isn't the typical American wife that stays at home but she isn't. She is almost the man of the house in this film. She treats her husband like a child. In the picture above you can see her driving to work but dropping off her child at school but in the picture it looks like Lester is the child sitting in the back. He should be at least in the front but he acts like the child of the family so she treats him that way. She wears a lot of red and blue, this is because of the american flag and because it is called American beauty the mise on sen is based on the red white and blue but they put Lester in bland colours to represent his life.
Jane:
Jane is the typical teenager, moody, dark and sarcastic. On most of her clothes she wears a lot of roses , this is because her parents think of her as there little rose. In the first picture you can see the roses in front of her showing she is the rose of the family. She wears very dark clothes showing her mood as she is mainly moody.
The boy:
In the short scene that we watched he looked like a very suspicious character, he was filming Jane and her Dad, this may be linked with the starting scene when someone asked her if she wanted her Dad dead. He is in the dark wearing black, this may be to hide from people when he is filming or to represent his personality.

Some good points but you needed to cover miss en scene, camera work and sound. You do refer to these areas but not in the detail hoped for.
