Online Digital Publications

Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/uk

Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html

They differ to there newspaper copies because of the page turning. You know don't have to physically own one to read it, you can just read it online, making it more accessible to more people across the globe. It is also easier to find articles so you don't have to search each page for it, you can search in the search bar. There is an ease of access to get from page to page. Stories are easier to find and the main stories are all on the front page still. The masthead is still there but when you click it, it takes you to the front page of the guardian/ daily mail. To try and maintain some amount of income from the online publication of the mail and the guardian, they try things like virtual cookies, advertising and promoting other online pages. Other online newspapers like the sun, you have to pay a monthly subscription to get the full stories.

They have changed to the online publication because they are starting to lose readership in physical copies. This has resorted in them moving to online to get readership up on there. Physical copies have become obsolete because it is really easy to just get the news up on your phone or iPad. This allows the newspapers to make apps or website notifications to encourage the user to read the newspaper. The online publication will more likely appeal to those who are younger and or people that own a phone because the accessibility is simple. For the users that use the guardian and the daily mail it is saving them money because they do not have to pay it is completely free but to read things like the sun online you have to pay a monthly subscription to read the stories which gives an edge on the daily mail (its rival) because they are free. This might result in a loss of profits for the daily mail but they could make that up by people moving from the sun to the daily mail because it is free. I think The guardian invests more into its online brand because the daily mail is littered with ads and other promotions which is used to make money where as the guardian has little ads making the layout look less packed and more spacious, this makes the page more inviting to potential users. Older generations will be used to getting up and going to their local shop to get a newspaper but the newer generations find it easier to find there information and news on their phones and other devices as it is quick and easy. The two brands generate an income like I said before by using advertising and online cookies. This allows them to make a little profit on the side of the paper copies. Some papers ask for a monthly subscription to their newspaper, so they can make money that way. The interactive elements on both of the online sites are very good. If you used it on your phone, you could get constant updates throughout the day so you don't miss any of the news. It is easy to navigate around the articles by using the latest headlines and the search bar. They have articles on display on the right side of the daily mail which makes readers want to read more articles
